Swept Away (Travolti da un insolito destino nell’azzurro mare d’agosto)(1964)

dir. Lina Wertmüller. Definite upgrade compared to the 2002 remake in terms of music, performances, and cinematography. The story however remains the same, except the beatings are more violent, and the rape takes longer. Also the beatings continue even after they “fall in love”. I did not enjoy it, and would not recommend it. A few moments of attempted humor were particularly loathsome. It is fun to see a young Giancarlo Giannini, who features in many recent Hollywood films, including as René Mathis in Bond films CASINO ROYALE (2006), and QUANTUM OF SOLACE (2008).
